Before your operation
- Review of your medical history, medicines and allergies
- Any tests needed before it is safe to proceed
- A discussion of the type of anaesthesia and what it involves
- Clear instructions on fasting and which medicines to continue
Types of anaesthesia
- General anaesthesia — you are unconscious throughout
- Regional anaesthesia — a spinal or nerve block numbs part of the body while you stay awake
- Local anaesthesia with sedation — for shorter procedures
Tell the anaesthetist about
Any previous problem with an anaesthetic, in you or a close relative; loose teeth or dental work; heartburn; and every medicine you take, including anything bought without a prescription.
