Anaesthesia and pain control for surgery, procedures and childbirth, with pre-operative assessment.

Anaesthetists keep you safe and comfortable during surgery and monitor you continuously while you are under their care. They also run pre-operative assessment and manage pain after the operation.

Before your operation

  • Review of your medical history, medicines and allergies
  • Any tests needed before it is safe to proceed
  • A discussion of the type of anaesthesia and what it involves
  • Clear instructions on fasting and which medicines to continue

Types of anaesthesia

  • General anaesthesia — you are unconscious throughout
  • Regional anaesthesia — a spinal or nerve block numbs part of the body while you stay awake
  • Local anaesthesia with sedation — for shorter procedures

Tell the anaesthetist about

Any previous problem with an anaesthetic, in you or a close relative; loose teeth or dental work; heartburn; and every medicine you take, including anything bought without a prescription.
