OPD Services

The hospital's diagnostic imaging service, covering X-ray, ultrasound, cardiac studies and endoscopy.

Radiology and Imaging provides the diagnostic tests the rest of the hospital depends on. Every examination is reviewed and reported by a radiologist, and results are made available to your treating consultant.

Examinations available

  • X-ray — digital X-ray (CR), mobile bedside X-ray, dental films and OPG
  • Ultrasound — 2D and 4D scanning of the abdomen, pelvis, obstetric scanning, thyroid, breast and soft tissue
  • Cardiac — 12 channel ECG, 2D and 4D echocardiography, echo colour Doppler
  • Vascular — duplex studies of arteries and veins
  • Neurophysiology — digital EEG
  • Endoscopy — video endoscopy of the digestive tract
  • Other — spirometry and uroflowmetry

Before you come

Preparation differs by examination — some need fasting, some need a full bladder, most need nothing at all. Follow the instructions on your request form, and ring the department if anything is unclear. Coming unprepared is the commonest reason a scan has to be repeated.

Always tell the department if

You are, or may be, pregnant; you have a pacemaker or any metal implant; or you have reacted to contrast dye before.
